Solent Marine have just completed the works at Torbay Harbour. This happens to be the debut of the new Simbro finger pontoons and the offical 2000 th enquiry. Being the outter harbour there was alot of design work that had to be put in with regards to the wave & wind loads, however this was not a problem due to the new float system that Solent Marine have developed.

We were successful in winning the contract to supply Torbay Harbour with their long awaited visitors pontoons. The design of the system was complicated by having to attach a new bridge to an existing platform and supply universal wall columns to a raked wall.

Solent Marine supplied 3 metre pontoon units on the island of Yell for this northerly project. The Small Craft Facility was designed to withstand the Shetland Islands extreme weather conditions. Our Senior Designer Steve Gibbons said "It's the sort of project that we get very excited about as we have a lot to contribute by way of experience in creating these extra robust structures".

This complete "Design & Build" project drew upon our extensive knowledge of the needs of the disabled. A 2m wide access bridge enables two wheel chairs to pass each other while the 30m long bridge was designed with 3 rest stops spaced evenly every 10m.

Today the replica square-rigger "The Matthew" regularly berths there.

This project was all about replacing pontoons that had been incorrectly specified for the conditions. The Solent Marine team were approached because they had already installed a number of units successfully on the same stretch of river. The "Before" picture (click on "Zoom" to the left) shows what can happen when a pontoon system is not designed for such as exposed set of conditions.

Solent Marine also manufactured Southampton Oceanography Centre's pontoon units.

British Waterways

Solent Marine was the successful supplier to British Waterways for the 60-mile Millennium Link refurbishment - supplying in excess of 70 pontoon units. This success was due to in part to our ability to manufacture and supply a rolling program over a matter of weeks rather than months.

British Waterways also selected Solent Marine to provide units for the Crinan Canal
